The notary and the registry
The sale is done by a notary (escribano), and the change of ownership is registered with the Registro de la Propiedad Mueble, Sección Automotores (the motor vehicle registry), of the DGR, in the department where the vehicle was first registered. You present the notarial minute, the motor vehicle minute form and the sale document. The registration costs $ 2,530, and the most urgent service $ 3,812, according to the DGR page updated on 16/03/2026. Online it’s done with a gub.uy user account and an advanced electronic signature.
The SUCIVE certificate
The SUCIVE certificate shows the vehicle’s status: the vehicle tax, pending traffic fines, tolls owed and the SOA (compulsory motor insurance). You request it with the online request using the plate, the padrón (registration number) and the department, which are on the registration card or on a vehicle tax bill.
- Once requested, you have 5 calendar days to pay for it, and 180 days to download it.
- Once issued, it’s valid for 10 calendar days.
- It can be extended for free twice within the 180 days, and each extension is valid for 24 hours.
We didn’t find the certificate’s current cost on an official page.
The change of owner
With the title registered, the new owner does the change of owner at the intendencia where the vehicle is registered, which gives them the registration card (the DIV) in their name. The intendencias ask for the vehicle tax up to date with no pending fines, and valid SOA. Each one has its own requirements, booking and cost.
