Driver’s license in Canelones

First time

For categories A, G1, G2, B and H. Each category’s page asks for:

• Uruguayan ID card or passport, valid and in good condition.
• No unpaid fines and no current disqualification for spirometry, THC or a court order.

1. Book the appointment online: A, G1 and G2 or B and H, and download the booking ticket.
2. Go on the day and time of the appointment to the office you chose, with all the documents. You pay that day.
3. You take the theory exam, which you must pass to go on, and the practical exam. The theory exam is waived if you already hold another valid category. For B there’s a second theory exam, which isn’t waived.

The procedure is done at the same office until it’s finished and lapses after 180 days: after that you start again, payment included. If you already have A, B isn’t a first time: it’s a change of category.

If you failed an exam or have one pending, the appointment to take it again is free. If you miss the exam, it counts as failed and there’s no new appointment for 30 days.

The page for category G1 says over 18; the category table and the national protocol say 16. If you’re getting G1 before 18, confirm it at 1828.

Renewal

• From 30 days before it expires and up to 2 years after it expired.
• Bring the permit to renew and any other you hold; if it was stolen or you lost it, the police report.
• For A, G1 and G2, the psychophysical certificate from an authorised institution; from age 80, from a clinic authorised for people over 80.
• For B, C, D, E, F, G3 and H, the health card and tests no more than 6 months old, with the psychophysical exam at the Intendencia or at an outside institution.
• If it expired more than 2 years ago, you take the theory and practical exams. From age 75, the practical test.

You book online: A, G1 and G2 or B to H with the exam at the Intendencia. If you’re over 75 or it expired more than 2 years ago, two bookings are needed.

For A, G1 and G2 there’s also an online renewal request, with no appointment, for people under 75 whose permit expired less than 2 years ago. We couldn’t open the online procedure’s page in the official catalogue, so we can’t confirm the payment or the delivery: ask at 1828.

Cost

According to the pages updated on 17/08/2026 (first time) and 15/09/2026 (renewal). You pay on the day of the procedure. The Intendencia publishes the cost in UR (Unidad Reajustable), without saying which month; the DGI publishes each month’s value.
