Driver’s license in Rivera

How to book

In the city of Rivera you book a day and time on the Intendencia’s online booking page. In Minas de Corrales, Tranqueras and Vichadero you go to the local office. Every procedure starts at Licencia de Conductores, and for any of them you can’t have unpaid traffic fines.

First time

For every category, the Intendencia’s pages ask for:

• A valid ID card in good condition, and a photocopy.
• The medical exam, which starts at the Intendencia. If you have diabetes, bring the glycaemia and glycated haemoglobin tests, no more than three months old.
• Passing the theory exam.
• A vehicle suited to the category for the practical test, with its SOA and patente up to date. You go with the vehicle’s legal owner or with a person licensed to drive.

1. Book a day and time online, or go to your town’s office with the documents.
2. Hand in the documents at Licencia de Conductores.
3. For A, G1 and G2, you take the training course before the theory test: you’re given the day and time when you start the procedure.
4. You sit the theory and practical exams.

The first license is valid for 2 years, or the period the doctor sets. The procedure has to be finished within 180 calendar days.

For a professional category, the Licencia de Conductores page says to book once you have the criminal record certificate.

Minors

The license for minors, from 16 to 18, also asks for the ID card and a photocopy of the father’s, mother’s or guardian’s, the birth certificate, the proof of address of the father, mother or guardian, and a photocopy of the license of the adult who comes to the practical test. The minor goes with their mother and father or with their guardian. This permit only allows driving in the urban areas of Rivera, Tranqueras, Minas de Corrales and Vichadero.

Renewal

• Only licenses that have expired, or that expire within the next 30 days, are renewed.
• Your ID card, original and photocopy, and your license.
• The medical exam, at the Intendencia, with the same tests if you have diabetes.
• For B, C, D, E, F, H and G3, also the criminal record certificate and a valid health card.
• If it expired two years ago or more, you sit the theory and practical tests and take the training course.

The renewal pages say the procedure is completed within 180 business days.

Duplicate and licenses from elsewhere

• Duplicate, for theft, loss, damage or another reason: the ID card and, for theft or loss, the police report. You pay before the day and time of your booking, at the Intendencia or at a payment network.
• A license from another department that was lost or stolen: the homologation page asks for the ID card, the police report and the medical exam.
• A foreign license: the revalidation asks for the license and sanctions history, with an apostille and a translation. Brazilian licenses also need notarial authentication at a cartório; those from other countries, authentication at their embassy. With a Mercosur license only the amateur categories are revalidated, with a theory and a practical exam; the professional ones, only with licenses of Italian or Spanish origin.

Cost

The Intendencia publishes the cost in UR, without saying which month’s; the DGI publishes each month’s value.

Offices

For the Rivera office, some catalogue pages say until 15:00; the Licencia de Conductores page, updated on 31/07/2025, says 8:15 to 14:45. Questions to [email protected].
