How to book
Book a day and time on the web booking: choose Dirección de Tránsito and the booking for your procedure. You can also book at Atención al Público, in the hall of the Palacio Municipal. If you booked online, when you arrive you check in at the kiosk at the entrance with your ID. By phone you can only ask questions.
First time
For A, B, G1, G2 and H, the first time page asks for:
- A valid ID card.
- Any licenses you hold in other categories, or the police report of loss or theft.
- For your first permit, proof of attending the Charla de Seguridad Vial en Movilidad Urbana (road safety talk), which is also booked.
- The sworn statement of medical fitness form, with a $ 44 professional stamp.
- Being 18; G1 from 16. For G1 before 18, the father and mother or the guardian sign the form, with the marriage booklet, the birth certificate or proof of guardianship.
- For A and B, proof from an authorised driving instructor that you completed the training required by the Ordenanza General de Tránsito (Decree 8.927).
- For the professional categories B, C, D, E, F and H, a valid health card.
- Book the procedure and, if it’s your first permit, the talk.
- Download and print double-sided the medical exam form; if you can’t, they give you one at the office.
- On the booked day you go to the Unidad de Expedición de Licencias de Conducir, at the Palacio Municipal. They process the documents and give you the payment code. If you have pending fines, you pay them at a payment network or they book you for a payment plan.
- You take the medical exam, the theory test and the practical test.
- They take your photo and give you the PUNC card.
The page advises booking a date that leaves you time to prepare for the exams; if not, you’re rebooked when you show up.
Renewal
- You renew it once expired or in the last 29 days of validity.
- A valid ID card in good condition, and your licenses in other categories or the loss or theft report.
- The sworn statement of medical fitness form, with the $ 44 professional stamp, and the medical exam.
- For B, C, D, E, F and H, a valid health card.
- Over 75, the practical test, in every category.
- If it expired more than 2 years ago, the theory and practical tests.
- For the practical test you go with a licensed driver without fines, with the vehicle’s registration card, the vehicle tax receipt up to date, valid insurance with its receipt and the companion’s license.
The renewal page adds that the payment code is generated after the medical exam, prorated by term, and that G3 holders whose age gives them a short renewal term can ask to go down to G1 or G2 to get a longer one.
Duplicate
For loss or theft, the duplicate asks for a valid ID card, one police report for each lost or stolen permit, and the permits to be valid; if not, it’s a renewal. If you hold other permits, you hand them in. It’s by appointment, at the Oficina de Expedición de Licencias de Conducir or at the municipalities that issue licenses. The new card includes all your valid licenses. It costs 0.63 UR.
Moving up a category
To move to a higher category, the category upgrade asks for your ID card, the licenses you hold, no fines or overdue payment plans and a health card, with each category’s age and seniority. Once started, it’s valid for 180 days.
