Register a new vehicle

For cars, the registration page asks for:

• An appointment.
• A photocopy of the ID card of the person registering, who must be the person named on the bill of sale.
• The vehicle’s bill of sale, with the signature registered at the Tránsito offices.
• The vehicle’s SOA.
• Proof of address in the department: a bill from a state body or a notarial certification.
• If it’s a company, the notarial certificate of who represents it and a photocopy of their ID card. If it’s a lease, the bank’s authorisation.

For motorcycles, the ID card, the promise of sale with signatures certified by a notary (or the buyer and the seller going to the Tránsito office), proof of address (a UTE, OSE or Antel bill, or a notarial certification) and the SOA up to date. The car page explains that the police certificate is only valid for registering motorcycles.

A vehicle coming from another department

Re-registration gives it a plate number and padrón in Lavalleja, with or without a transfer. It asks for a photocopy of the ID card, proof of address in the department, the valid SOA, the registration card and the plates, and an inspection of the vehicle by the Intendencia’s inspector before the procedure. If it’s a company, the notarial certificate of who represents it.

For motorcycles it also asks you to return the plates (or, if they were stolen or lost, the police report with the plate number), the vehicle tax and insurance up to date, and the previous and current owners to sign.

Duplicate

If it was lost or stolen, the duplicate registration card asks for an appointment, a photocopy of the ID card, the municipal owner or their representative going in person with a power of attorney with notarised signatures, the police report (original and copy) and the SOA.
